Fathskie, that's a very good. What you're saying is basically equivalent to "I can understand you want to know thousands of people for business purposes, but do you really need - or can even handle - thousands of friends?". And the answer is in what you say. Yes, I think all the people who have thousands of followers basically view Twitter as a business tool. That does not mean they do not form friendships and make friends, but looking for many followers is for business reasons.

I have several close friends of Twitter, and some of them are extremely active, and yet have less than 100 followers. This support this theory perfectly: people who are just looking for friends don't need too many followers. That being said, by having exposure to more people, you do get a chance to meet more people, but that's certainly an overkill.

As for actually handling a lot of people: TweetDeck is really powerful a tool. If you're good at chatting with several people at once, then you should be able to handle a fairly large number of conversations at once. Of course, if any of those require a great deal of attention (as a personal conversation might) then you'd be more limited. I never got overwhelmed with Twitter so far. It also helps that the messages are not entirely real time, but slightly delayed (unlike an ordinary chat room).

I don't understand one thing, if someone wants thousands of followers, by consequences he/she would also have thousands of friends (or is it not necessary so?) And with thousands of friends how do you keep track of your timeline, or tell who's who? If you're using twitter for business it won't be a problem, but if for social purpose, won't that be... Overwhelming?

Hi Tilio - more than 200? Very, very easy. Just spend some time on Twitter every day posting interesting articles, commenting about people's articles, retweeting tweets, for, say, 5 days, and I guarantee you you'll have at least 500 followers.

As I wrote later, I think it's very easy until 2,000, then it gets harder this way.

Hey Ned, great seeing you here, and thanks for the kind words! Note that since I wrote this article (August 22, 10 days ago) I almost doubled my follower number (currently at 2153). There are so many products being promoted and sold for gaining Twitter followers when an effective solution can be done - for free!

Hi Vinny! It's good to hear this reaffirmation. Just 10 minutes ago I got a message from someone claiming he can get "4,000 followers in 90 days" (some kind of service or a tool). Hey, I can do that. Faster and more fun! ;) Felt like responding to him but there was no point.

Out of curiosity, how many followers have you amassed? what's your twitter user?

The best way to get people to follow you is exactly what you did, interaction with them. I have been building twitter list for a while now and tried all the different ways and the best way is to find actual followers in your niche.

The amount of people that you get to follow you is irrelevant its all about quality.

Thanks Drew! I appreciate your comment. Although I think my followers are of (much) higher quality than say, those using Hummingbird or twollow, I know some just follow me for no reason. Hopefully this will prove to be worth it. That being said, I think this way is just better because it's natural, more fun - and clearly works. An additional point I didn't mentino is that it is also safer. I think it'll really suck for some people if Twitter decides to ban many users based on several criteria (which is not impossible - if this was Google, this would've happened already). I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Udi,
This a good post because it is real, you found followers a real way and those will be people who will continue to follow you long into the future.
