Terri, I didn't suggest Twitter will vanish, let alone overnight - I don't think this will happen. Even Friendster and MySpace still exist, long after Facebook has completely taken their space.

While I agree that having many followers is likely to discourage some people from leaving (probably most), if a new and significantly improved platform comes along, they'll do so eventually. I know I will. Don't forget it'll also present new opportunities. For example, I currently have 97,000 followers... but so what? There are 1,500 people with similar or more followers. Now if I were present at the very beginning of Twitter...

Anyway, I don't think I will try and get many followers at any such new platform. This was a fun exercise, but ultimately not one I think I need to repeat.

Udi, your insights might prove to be true—just as you noted the surprise when Google upstaged AltaVista and Yahoo.

I guess there could be a mass migration to a new micro-blogging service, but what about all the people (like you) who are at or near 100K followers?

It seems it will be impossible to get all of those people to move to a new venue—so even super stars would be starting from scratch, right?

To me, that seems like the single compelling reason why Twitter will continue at least in some form.

Thanks again for another insightful post. Cheers, Terri

Well thanks a lot. If the residual income from the blog is good @ the time my priorities change, I might just consider not selling and update the blog every once in a while ;-)

Hi5 came and faded cos I discovered MySpace a few months later then came Facebook from no where and blew my mind. Till date no other social network rocks my rock like Facebook and I pray it's got staying power a la Google.

As you rightly say, when a business model keeps "ignoring its flaws", some one is definitely going to seal that flaw with another product and bring about the death of the former. Here's hoping that twitter will sit up soon.

Hey Andy - thanks, and *exactly*! Now it may seem impossible but things could change so quickly and have a habit of doing so.

As for the quote, it certainly sounds more plausible than mine :) Perhaps that was it.
