Arwen, Agreed – I’ve heard a similar metaphor – specifically in the context of trying to monetize it. (i.e. “Would you go to someone in a cocktail party and say ‘hey, do you want to buy teeth whitening? A mother with 2 kids has successfully whitened her teeth!’).

As for monetizing – exactly my point. Though I think things may change soon. I hope.

In general, I agree with you. However, I do think Twitter suffers from a very serious problem: first, lack of a framework for advertising – this discourages businesses from using it. Second, the same issue causes the spam issues. By dealing with this Twitter would be killing two birds with one stone.

I rarely get spam on FB, but on Twitter it’s a fact of life. Until this is resolved, I don’t think Twitter will truly flourish. However, I’d like to believe they’ll overcome this soon.

Link building in the same of networking, yes. But in terms of SEO… not so much. Though lately Google has been indexing some tweets and I’m really exploring the effect this has on SEO these days (still not sure).

Twitter is hitting mainstream now especially with the dawn of the real time search from Google. I think next year all businesses will need a twitter account and it will be just as it was a few years back where nobody had a website and never thought they would need one!

I think of Twitter as a cocktail party where people go around introducing themselves and getting to know each other. While it is possible to directly monetize Twitter, I don’t think that’s the best use of the site. It is better as a way to start a relationship with someone you want to get to know.
